  • A thought on gore and monsters in horror fiction

    coelasquid:

Okay, so I love horror stories, I love Creepypasta, I even love a lot of bad Creepypasta just because it’s so earnest. You can tell a great deal of it is being written by kids who just want so bad to make something scary but just don’t quite understand how to communicate the ideas in their head efficiently. But I love it, and I love them for trying so hard. So if it’s any help, I made an effort to identify some running themes with these writing issues and assemble some of my own thoughts on horror in stories, comics, and motion pictures and how the pacing of those different mediums effect how you have to deliver the spooky. Just in case it helps ease the frustration for anyone wondering why their spooky stories are having a hard time carrying through on the spooky front they want it to.

And it’s long as hell so I’ll put it under a cut.

A piece for illustrators Anna Rose & Jenny Zych's Strange Paradise asian-horror zine coming out this spring! “Tomie” (Junji Ito) was my first real introduction into j-horror and a stepping stone into the eroguro stuff I’m very fond of now.

    The Thing by Drew Struzan

26” X 36” Screen print. S/N Regular edition of 440, plus a glow in the dark variant in an edition of 150.

It should look familiar as this is the original painted artwork used back in 1982, but now seen without the title, taglines, and cast credits. This is Struzan’s original painting in all it’s raw, unadulterated glory.

Exclusively available at The Alamo Drafthouse's screening this Friday as part of the Summer of 1982 season. Remaining prints will be sold online via MONDO at a later date.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU WOULD HEAR IN CASE OF A NUCLEAR ATTACK

Many countries have systems that allow them to speak to as many people as possible in case of something catastrophic.

The United States has the Emergency Alert System. When triggered, the system interrupts all T.V and radio systems to speak.

This is what it sounds like.

The most creepiest and terrifying noise and voices ever.

This is scary as hell and yet terribly fascinating…

Horror Films With Incredible Poster/Cover Art:

    From top left:

    • Blue Monkey (1987)
    • A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)
    • Rabid Grannies (1988)
    • Class of Nuke ‘Em High (1986)
    • Street Trash (1987)
    • Return of the Living Dead Part II (1988)
    • The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
    • The Video Dead (1987)
    • Fright Night (1985)
    • The Video Dead (detailed close-up - 1600 x 1000px)

As far as I’m concerned, there are few things in the world more beautiful than 1980’s poster art, particularly in the horror genre.  Bright, bold colors and painstaking attention to detail, lovingly hand-painted by various masters of their craft.  They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

  • saltlick - a horror story

    ascendent:

    milophenidate:

the street was narrow, made up of two rows of tall semidetached clapboard houses. the street ran at an exact right angle to the track of the sun across the sky. because of this, and the tallness of the houses, and the narrowness of the street, the sun touched the front doors of the houses only at midday. even on sunny days, the road was usually in shadow. the long damp shadows bred dank green mosses and sparse yellow lichens in the cracks between the boards. the slats of light that broke down the alleyways cut the blacktop like a barcode.

in one of these houses there lived a father and a mother and a little boy. the father was big, burly, with a thick mop of red-brown hair. he liked western philosophy and drove a pickup truck that he had christened the “skipmobile”. he worked freelance for building firms. the mother was tall and thin and wore thick glasses. she wrote essays on chemistry and sometimes analysed samples sent by courier van from a college in the nearest city. the boy was small and scrawny and didn’t do much. they moved to the town in the spring of the boy’s seventh year.
